This pattern is available in the book “Feltique” by Nikola Davidson and Brookelynn Morris. It is knit and then fulled/felted, and though it was designed with Malabrigo, I think any feltable worsted weight would do. A note on yardage: the pattern calls for a one skein of each color, but if you are working from your stash, you’ll only need a whole skein of the main color. The contrast (trim/handles/tree rings) requires approximately half-a-skein, and only a fraction is needed of the colors used for the owl-shaped change purse.

Here is my original (cheeky) explanation of the project:

The Appalachian regions of these United States are oft overlooked, nay, even denigrated by the city-types that run the fashion world. But if you just take the time to look past the rural blight, and avert your eye from the suspiciously repetitive gene pairings, you’ll find much that is hip can come rolling down the mountain. Take the humble log. In fact, take it with you everywhere you go. With the Appalachian Carry-All.

This here log has all the features of the original: a fashion-forward cylindrical shape, roomy hollow interior, the season’s hottest colors… heck, it’s even got a habitat! Many’s the cute forest critter that regards the hollow log as nature’s living room, and though this one is made of wool, it’s still home to a friendly little wood owl. And if you’re nice to her, she’ll even carry your change for you.
