The Aran Knit Fisherman’s sweater is the perfect fall or winter outfit for your doll, especially with the matching hat.

This gorgeous, crisp-textured sweater comprises diamonds, twisted cables and three stranded braids all separated by areas of reverse stockinette stitch. The overall effect is a warm, chunky sweater that looks fabulous.

This PDF knitting pattern uses a mix of different types of cables and braids. The 4 stitch cables at each end of the front and back are mirror images of each other and twist towards the edges of the knitting. The next pattern in on each side is a 3 strand braided cable worked over 6 stitches. The center of the front and back is a diamond pattern with a smaller center diamond to add interest.

For the sleeves, the end cables are again mirror images of each other and twist towards the edge of the knitting. The next pattern in on each side is a 3 part braided cable as for the front and back. The center pattern in the sleeve is an 8 stitch wheat pattern, but it is simpler than it looks as it is created by working two mirrored 4 stitch cables with no purl stitches in between.

Although the stitch patterns look intricate, they are created from simple knit and purl stitches which are twisted or braided using a cable needle to temporarily hold the stitches.

If you haven’t knitted cables before, never fear! A doll sweater is the ideal place to learn. Photo instructions for the cables are included to get you started and there are plenty of videos to be found on the internet if you are more of a visual learner.

The pattern includes a record chart so that you can keep details of the yarns and needle sizes used should you wish to knit the sweater again at a later date. Research on Aran Knitting history and techniques is included before the pattern summary should you wish to read further about this technique.

The 10 page printable summary incorporates tick boxes beside the row numbers so that you can easily keep a track of your progress as you work through the pattern.

Whether you knit it in the natural creams and browns of untreated sheep’s wool, or if you love the bright, fun colors of synthetic yarn, the Aran Knit Fisherman’s Sweater is bound to please your doll.
