Encounter your inner alien! Or your outer (space) alien …

This hat was created for my son, who I knew would love that Alien Illusion Scarf but never wears scarves, just hats. So thanks for the inspiration! And a shout out to Ann Budd’s Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns, which allowed me to make it the right size.

The shadow knit gives you an alien, or a striped hat. Or actually, both.

I only designed it in one size, but if you need to adjust it smaller, simply remove a few stitches between the designs. There is a buffer of six stitches between the widest parts of the design and the edge of the design. So for every inch you might want to make the hat smaller, decrease one stitch from either side of the design, and cast on six less stitches.

This is the first design I’ve written up for other folks to use, so please let me know if you find errors in it or find the directions difficult to follow.

Have fun!
