Artemis, sister of Apollo and Greek goddess of the Hunt and Light, was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities. Fiercely independent, she chose the wild and verdant beauty of the forest over marriage, parenthood, and city life. She was the goddess of wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, and virginity, as well as the protector of women and children. She was often depicted in a knee length tunic carrying a bow and arrows aboard a stag drawn chariot. However, as the “Goddess of Light” she was associated with the “new” moon. In this role, she is shown wearing a floor length robe and veil carrying a candle or torch, lighting the way for others, leading them through territories yet uncharted.

This pattern uses simple cables and beads to depict Artemis’s Torch illuminating the darkness. For this pattern, I recommend using solid or low contrast yarn to showcase the intricate stitch work, but any color way of your choice will work. Twisted stitch and cable work can also limit the stretchiness of the finished sock, so either use a yarn that is springy, use larger needles, or size up. Directions are provided for 4 adult women’s sock sizes, extra small, small, medium, and large, equivalent to women’s shoe sizes US 6-6.5 (EU 36-37), US 7-7.5 (EU 37.5-38), US 8-8.5 (EU 38.5-39), and US 9-9.5 (EU 40-41). Directions include a fitted heel and simple arch shaping. Stitch pattern included only as chart.
