From the pattern description on the website

These socks were so-named because the design resembles artichoke leaves, as depicted in the two insert pictures. The top insert shows how the design looks knitted with a mult-colored yarn.

Also, don’t let the thin snake-like appearance of the sock pictured discourage you from trying out this pattern. When you put the sock on, it really looks beautiful on your foot and your ankle.
