These quick an easy mitts are a great way to use a single skein of a truly beautiful luxury yarn. In cashmere they will keep your wrists (and consequently your whole body) warm. The smocking detail at the wrist keeps them snug and fitted.

Yarn: 100{115, 132} yards of sport weight yarn. Artyarns
Cashmere Sock (67% Cashmere/25% Wool/8% Nylon), 160 yards per 50 gm skein), in ‘302 Half Strength’; 15 wpi

Needles: 3.5mm (US 4) double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 25 sts and 37 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) square in smocking pattern after blocking.

Finished Sizes: 6{7, 8} inches (15.25{17.75, 20.25} cm) hand circumference.

Notions: stitch markers to mark gusset and beginning of
round, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

The mitts are meant to fit with about .25 inch of negative ease but will fit a larger hand circumference more snuggly. The model shown is a 7 inch size mitt on a 7.25 inch circumference
hand. Hand circumference should be measured as shown in the diagram at right.

When you rejoin the round above the bound-off gusset stitches, the join becomes a stress point in the knitted fabric that pulls across the palm. To mitigate this, slip the last stitch before the marker to the right hand needle without working it, bind off the gusset stitches, slip the remaining stitch left over from the bind-off back to the left hand needle, remove the slipped stitch before the gusset to a cable needle or some other method for holding it aside, transfer the bind-off stitch back to the right needle, then knit the stitch from the cable needle. This switches the knitting order of the stitches on each side of the gap created by the thumb gusset and reinforces the join.
