I created this blanket inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2007, during the long drought between seasons 2 and 3 as a way to hold myself over. I made it available as a pattern so that other fans could make their own blanket, and I can’t believe so many people have taken on this project! This project is a time investment, but a lot of fun and I’m so happy to see so many people enjoy making a blanket of their own.

I updated this pattern to create an easier to manage pdf version rather than the old blog post version. It is now available as a free, downloadable pdf on Ravelry. I’ve also tried to fix some errors to the best I can given I no longer have the original chart files available.

Also I will say this was one of my very first fiber arts projects and I was making up a lot of this as I went along! So some approaches here may not be the best or standard way to do this. I say this in the context of using cluster sts for the foreground colors, and carrying the 2nd color of yarn all the way through. If you look through some Ravelers’ projects on here, they’ve had success using hdc in place of the cluster sts, and not carrying the yarn through large sections of one color (which might cause uneven thickness but will save some time and yarn). Others used Tunisian Crochet. I’d say to experiment a bit with this and do what feels right to you! It is your blanket.

I’d like to also point out that Ravelry user Terif created a knitted version, and wrote some notes on her modifications at the link.
