The Aztek artifact crochet pattern came to my mind after watching a documentary about newly found and discovered artifacts that belong to the Maya civilization. Especially the golden discs, which are decorated with so many small geometric decorations, and the golden coins took my attention. My mind immediately started translating these objects into a new crochet pattern, resulting in this Aztek Artifact pattern. This wonderful pattern is very diverse and colorful to work on.

Some general information about the pattern:

Yarn Requirements: For this pattern, I used a combination of two types of yarn. One Scheepjes Whirl which comes in cakes of 215-225 grams with a length of 1000 meters. The yarn consists of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. Besides this Whirl, I used Scheepjes Cotton 8, which is available in balls of 50 grams with a length of 170 meters. This yarn consists of 100% cotton.

Instead of Cotton 8, a Scheepjes Whirlette can also be used. The test version is done with this type of yarn.

Color A: 3 balls of Scheepjes Cotton 8 in colorway 502 – or take 1 ball of Scheepjes Whirlette in colorway 860 Ice.
Color B: 1 Scheepjes Whirl – In the example shown, I used colorway 774 Salted Caramel Matcha. The test version is made with a 776 Rosewater cocktail.

Hook Size needed: You will need a 3.0mm hook size for this pattern

Size: The finished diameter of this project will be: 80 cm/ 32 inches.

The pattern is built up by crocheting layers - it is actually on the same base as doing the overlay mosaic crochet technique. The pattern holds very clear written instructions, and charts to guide you along. The charts definitely give a very good impression of how to work layer over layer. It is a very large pattern with a lot of instructions and charts.

After purchase, you can download a digital PDF file in the available languages - which are English (US) and Dutch.

In the Dutch version of the pattern on R63 was a little typo: Na het eerste st van 3l, maak 1st in de vlg 3 stk i.p.v. 4. Daarnaast missen de afkortingen voor een 2- en 3 dubbele stokjes samenhaken een s in de terminologie. Dit is na 15 April 2024 aangepast in de digital versie.
