We wanted to make mittens that were warm and chunky, but found that using a chunky or super chunky weight wool made them rather stiff and uncomfortable. By using an Aran weight wool and front post double crochet stitches you can create a dense, thick fabric with no holes that is stretchy and soft – perfect for small hands in chilly weather!

The mittens are worked in the round from the fingertips to the rib, joining after each round. This is a very simple pattern that would be suitable for a motivated beginner. If you are an experienced crocheter you can probably whip up a few pairs of these in an evening!
