Recommended Hook & Yarn / Finished size
Small (3-4”): No.4 / 1.25mm US with Size 10 Crochet thread
Large (7-8”): F / 3.75mm US with Worsted Weight Yarn

Gauge is not that important. Just be sure to use a hook that will allow you to have tight stitches with the yarn or thread that you plan to use.
