From Handknit Holidays: “If you’ve ever been to Maine, you might remember the small balsam sachets - commonly printed with trees, moose, or lighthouses - found in almost every gift shop. A native of Maine herself, Kim Hamlin is drawn to that smell, reminiscent of the outdoors, peaceful places, and the December holidays all at once. Her version of those gift-store sachets are knitted out of linen yarn and filled with balsam fir, a favorite choice for Christmas tress and wreaths.

These sachets are simple, fast and versatile, the pattern being easily adapted to any size square you’d like. As shown here, they’re perfect for drawers, closets, or mailing packages. Slightly bigger squares filled less full make aromatic coasters, and squares of any size can become throw pillows for the couch. Try experimenting with aromatic herbs, too - relaxing lavender is particularly appropriate for the holidays, bay leaves are sacred to the sun god Apollo (an important figure in solstice celebrations), and rosemary has the added benefit of keeping evil spirits at bay, according to superstitions of the Middle Ages.“
