Construction Details
The Basic Adult Poncho is worked seamlessly in the round from the neckline towards the bottom edge. Increases are worked to create subtle shoulder shaping as well as to create the clearly defined points on the front and back of the poncho. Suggestions are given for border patterns within the instructions. There are suggestions for ideal fit for sizes XS through 4XL.

Skills Required

Sizes: Adult sizes – variable according to knitter’s preference, but suggestions for XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL, 3XL/4XL) are written where applicable.

Finished measurements: all sizes have a neck circumference of 20”/50 cm. Suggested finished length is 18 (20, 22, 24)”/46 (51, 56, 61) cm measured straight down the side of the poncho but is adaptable to knitter’s preference.

Yarn: Yardage amounts vary based on poncho length.
DK weight (CYCA #3): approximately 1500-1700 yards.
Worsted weight (CYCA #4): approximately 950-1200 yards.
Chunky weight (CYCA #5): approximately 650-900 yards.

Gauge: All gauge swatches should be worked in Stockinette Stitch.
DK weight: 20 sts and 28 rounds = 4”/10 cm using size needle to obtain gauge.
Worsted weight: 16 sts and 24 rounds = 4”/10 cm using size needle to obtain gauge.
Chunky weight: 14 sts and 20 rounds = 4”/10 cm using size needle to obtain gauge.

Needles: All ponchos require circular needles in 16”/40 cm, 24”/60 cm and 32”/80 cm or 40”/100 cm lengths. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain correct gauge.
DK weight: US 6 (4 mm).
Worsted weight: US 9 (5.5 mm).
Chunky weight: US 10.5 (6.5 mm).

Other Materials: tapestry needle, four stitch markers. One marker should be a distinguishing style or color to mark the beginning of the round. The other three markers will be referred to as marker 1, marker 2, and marker 3 in the pattern.
