The Grand Plan series of articles by Ann Budd was eventually compiled into a book, The Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns. A chart form pattern: plug in your gauge and desired size and cast on the number of stitches listed, then follow the chart to complete the project.

Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches St St
Needle size: US 8 / 5.0 mm
Interweave staff project for this issue: make a tam based on the pattern adapted from the original which appeared in Knitted Tams, by Mary Rowe, Interweave Press 1989. Basic 10-inch Tam
Basic tam/beret pattern can be made in 3 weights of yarn and customized as the knitter prefers. Suggested yarns in other weights are some of those used by the staff to make their adaptations.
