Here is a great first sock pattern, for those who are ready to branch out beyond scarves and dishcloths. It is written for use with only 1 circular needle, using the Magic Loop method. If you are not yet familiar with Magic Loop knitting, there are literally thousands of tutorials online that can teach you! Or, if you want to use 2 circulars, or even 4 DPNs instead, simply ignore the references to “the 2nd needle.”

After trying out several toe options, I chose the Kitchener stitch woven toe closure. There are several tutorials on the Web for this stitch, too, but I’ve included one at the end of the pattern for easy reference. For the heel, I chose a basic dropped-slip-stitch, which is picked up later under both loops. This gives a strong join with the simplest instructions. It finishes with a super-stretchy yarn-over BO.

The Women’s sock has a stockinette foot, with a (K2, P2) ribbing leg. The Men’s sock uses (K2, P1) ribbing along the upper foot and up the leg.

There are also instructions for matching self-striping yarn, so that the pattern is the same on the second sock.

Materials:

  • 2 skeins DK yarn, #3 Light – about 250 – 294 yards
  • circular needle, size US 5 (3.75mm) – about 33” long, or longer
  • stitch holder for 20 – 24 stitches
  • yarn needle to weave in ends

Pattern is written for Women’s size, with Men’s size in (brackets).
