Before the Snow is an asymmetrical triangle shawl with three different ways to use gradients. Version one uses a single gradient kit, version two uses a gradient kit and four contrasting colors, and version three uses five different variegated or tonal colorways to create a unique custom gradient. Version three includes my tips for creating your own color progression using different variegated and tonal yarns. Each version can be knit with either Fingering or DK weight yarn, creating a smaller or larger sized shawl.

Reading the pattern:
Pages 2 & 3 contain information that relates to all three versions, and can be referenced throughout knitting the shawl. Pages 4 & 5 contain version one. Pages 6 & 7 contain version two. Pages 8 & 9 contain version three. This way you can print only the pages that you need.

Gauge:
Gauge does not matter that much in terms of fit for this shawl, but it will determine how much yarn you use. I recommend choosing your needle size based on your overall average knitting tension so that you don’t run the risk of not having enough yarn to finish each section of the shawl. If you tend to knit with a looser tension, I would choose the smaller needle size; if you tend to knit with a tighter tension I would pick the larger needle size (I’ve given needle size options in the materials section of each version).

Version One Materials:
• One Lilt Sock or Pebble Sock gradient kit from Black Trillium Fibres (approx. 165g for all 5 colors, 33g per gradient color) or Sublime DK gradient kit (approx. 250g, 50g each color).
• Size US 4 or 5 (3.5mm or 3.75mm) 40” circular needle for fingering weight version, size US 6 or 7 (4.0mm or 4.5mm) for DK version. See note about gauge to pick needle size.
• Stitch marker
• Tapestry needle
Blocking wires (optional

Version Two Materials:
• One Lilt Sock or Pebble Sock gradient kit from Black Trillium Fibres (approx. 165g for all 5 colors, 33g per gradient color) or Sublime DK gradient kit (approx. 250g, 50g each color).
• Four contrast colors in corresponding yarn weight (approximately 20g Fingering weight or 30g DK weight for each color).
• Size US 4 or 5 (3.5mm or 3.75mm) 40” circular needle for fingering weight version, size US 6 or 7 (4.0mm or 4.5mm) for DK version. See note about gauge to pick needle size.

Version Three Materials:
• Five different colorways of Fingering or DK weight yarn to form a color progression. At least 33g Fingering Weight, 50g DK.
• Size US 4 or 5 (3.5mm or 3.75mm) 40” circular needle for fingering weight version, size US 6 or 7 (4.0mm or 4.5mm) for DK version. See note about gauge to pick needle size.
