The Ketchikan Collection is a series of beaded lace patterns that highlight the rugged beauty of Ketchikan, Alaska using the unique qualities of Wonderland’s Unicorn yarn. Purchase the six individual patterns for $6 each or the entire collection for $20.

A plentiful resident on Ketchikan’s shores, the Belted Kingfisher is a beautiful bird. Along with the breed’s characteristic dusty blue-grey belt, the female sports a chestnut strip across her white belly that swoops down her sides and under her wings. At 11-14 inches long, they are dwarfed by the resident eagles, but their insistent chittering call and quick, darting flight gets them noticed.

At 15 inches (38 cm) depth, 72 inches (183 cm) wingspan, let the Belted Kingfisher’s wings envelop you in this long, curving shawl with a beaded lace short-row swoop, feathered body, and winged edging.

Four lace stitches are combined using short rows, increases, and decreases to shape the wingspan of the shawl. Don’t be intimidated by the amount of instructions or plentiful charts. Each section is small but all come together for a cohesive final product you will be proud to show off!

  • A short cast-on section will frame the collar of the shawl
  • Using German short rows with a twist, the beaded lace will avoid holes and quickly add stitches to the shawl
  • The collar connects to feathered wings that use the short row stitches to full advantage
  • The wingtips and center body pull the collar motif throughout the main shawl while adding more wingspan
  • A final feathery knit-on beaded lace borders the shawl, edged by the wing caps
