A classic beret in 7 sizes to fit everyone from newborn to large adult (head circumferences 34-60cm). This hat is knit in the round from the top down and can be made with or without the i-cord on top. The yarn is knit on needles smaller than the recommended size to produce a slightly denser fabric which holds its shape better.

You will need:

  • DK yarn such as Adriafil Regina Green (089), Deep Yellow (046) or Avio Blue (039). Approximately 25g/63m for a newborn’s beret, 36g/82m for a 1-2 year old’s beret and 55g/ 138m for a large adult’s beret.
  • A set of 5 x 3.5mm (US 4) and 3.25mm (US 3) double-pointed needles.
  • A tapestry needle.
  • A plate or other round object to block the beret on.

Techniques you should be familiar with before using this pattern:

  • Knitting in the round using double-pointed needles.
  • Knitting an i-cord (optional).
  • Lifted increases.
  • Centred double decreases (sometimes called s2kp2 or k3tog).
  • Sewn bind off, or another stretchy bind off.
