Bergtatt is a top-down triangular shawl with a true lace border and attached edging. A plain stockinette body is followed by a border requires patterned on both RS and WS rows. Although it may look complicated, it’s actually quite straightforward once the repeat is established.

The pattern has been test-knitted. It assumes that you know how to cast on provisionally and read charts. There is a photo tutorial that shows how to attach the edging.

The shawl is part of my series Dreams of Norway and is named for a folk song about a young woman, Margit Hjuxe, who was kidnapped by a troll king and made to live in the mountain with him (“bergtatt” means literally “taken by the mountain”). You can hear Arve Moen Bergsett sing a version of it here.

With many thanks to my testknitter Karen (puffycats)!
