I absolutely love the technique of crocheting between the stitches in a prior row rather than into them; it makes a fabric that is just a little bit different and thus just a little unexpected. I’ve been playing with this idea in various forms since I first ran across it, and this scarf is the result.

I have to confess that I also loved the idea of designing an item that was perfect for the much-maligned Homespun, since it is one of my favorite yarns to work with. The pattern, though, will work with any combination of yarn and hook that gives you a fabric you like…you’ll just need to adjust the length of the initial row and the number of rounds accordingly. The finished scarf varies in size depending on your choice of materials and pattern variant.

This pattern uses Foundation Double Crochet. Instructions for this stitch are included in the pattern.
