This quick and easy hat was inspired by the knitters of Instagram (#knitting) who are always sharing pictures of their lovely cabled hats.

It features seven big, fat, 12-stitch cables against a backdrop of reverse stockinette.

Wear it pointy or wear it round. Up to you! It’s your head.

Via silversheep’s project notes:

For a less pointy crown: Decrease every round instead of every other round.

For a turned-up brim: Knit the brim to at least 3 inches so you can turn it up!

Important:

  • The ribbing is knit on smaller needles to ensure a good fit. Use bigger needles and the hat will be too large.
  • The body/cabling is done on large needles to ensure that the cables don’t make the hat too tight and un-stretchy.
  • I highly recommend using wool with this pattern --followed by a light blocking. After soaking and drying, the cables “bloom” and look much more even!
  • Feeling adventurous? Try replacing the reverse stockinette stitch with garter stitch.

Should fit most adult heads, and probably most teens.

28 stitches = 4 inches in ribbing on smaller needles
24 stitches = 4 inches in cable pattern on larger needles

One ball of Cascade 220 and you’re set!
