The shawl is triangular shaped with yarn-over increases along the spine and side edges. There are 3 patterns in the body of the shawl – two sets of lace tree motifs and a textured knit and purl section between these. The shawl is finished off with a knit-on lace border.

If you wish to substitute yarn, choose a light DK/sportweight yarn with approximately 300 yards per 100 grams, that has a nice drape and will block well. You will need between 525 and 575 yards to complete the pattern as written.

One of my favorite set of books growing up, the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, begins with Little House in the Big Woods. This shawl features lace patterning with tree motifs, as well as a “9-Patch Quilt” section and a traditional lace border pattern from the mid-19th century.

Note that this pattern is also available as part of the year-long Heroines Shawl Club 2015 ebook.
