If you want the tree lace border to match on both sides, you should start with Row 7 when you begin knitting.

From the designer: “You can use any DK weight cotton for the bag, such as Jaeger Aqua, Rowan Cotton Glace, or Garnstudio Drops Muskat. The intarsia bird can be worked in any worsted-weight yarn—try some novelty or variegated yarns for a unique look!”

“Optional: Line the bag with pre-washed cotton calico fabric. Sew the Velcro or magnets to the inside of the bag, right below the lace borders.”
