Pattern Description
The Blooming Dahlia pattern is inspired by the many Dahlia blooming in my garden. The pattern is beautifully airy & designed with your choice of 2 knitting shapes: circle or crescent.

The circle can be used as a shawl or tabletopper.

Difficulty: Advanced, both RS and WS rows are charted, but WS rows are mostly knit and purl in pattern. Charts only, no written row-by-row description.

@Summbienchensumm has worked hard on a German translation, so I will add that to the files too. Please be aware that I don’t actually speak German, so questions in that language are as always welcome but will find quicker answers in the LittleGreenDragon group, where several members are native German speakers.

Full circle

Yarn: Dye Diana Dye Flaxensilk cobweb, 2 skeins needed. Shawl is worked with both yarns held together, which corresponds to heavy laceweight or light fingering. Sample was made with one thread colourway Rio de Oro and one thread colourway Jord (Earth) held together. You can make your own fade if you like, or use the same colour throughout.

If substituting yarn, you will need approx. 1300 m (1420 yards) of heavy laceweight/light fingering weight yarn or equivalent. You can use any yarn weight between lace and fingering as long as it has good stitch definition and will hold a block. If using skinnier weight yarn and smaller needles, you will need less yarn than stated. If using heavier weight yarn and larger needles, you will need more.

Construction: The shawl is worked from the centre out, with a knitted BO with picots. Picots can be left out or made very small.

Beads: Optional. Use size 8/0 seed beads, or the size you think fits your yarn. For the full circle and if you bead all the marked stitches, you will need 2044 beads. If beading picots, you will need an additional 56 larger beads, size 6/0 for instance, or larger drop beads or the like. You need a bead with a hole large enough for yarn held double, which means 8 strands of yarn if working with yarn held double.

Size: Sample is 53 inches (135 cm) in diameter. Pattern is 154 rows and cannot be expanded. If you find yourself running out of yarn or simply want a smaller piece, you will be able bind off sooner (instructions are included in the pattern).

Needles and hooks: US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle or the size you need to get a fabric you like. Crochet hook the same size as your needles can also be used for the bind off of the shortened version, but is not necessary.

Other notions: Stitch markers to mark beginning of round and for repeats if you wish. Small crochet hook or other gizmo for placing beads (if using beads). Darning needle.

Crescent

For the crescent, I wanted to experiment with mohair held together with the Flaxensilk cobweb. This corresponds to fingering weight.

Yarn: Dye Diana Dye Flaxensilk cobweb 1 skein and approx. 850 m mohair/silk lace yarn. Shawl is worked with both yarns held together.

If substituting yarn, you will need approx. 1000 m (1093 yards) of fingering weight yarn or equivalent, depending on your needle size and gauge.

You can use any weight yarn from lace to fingering as long as it has good stitch definition and will hold a block. If using laceweight and smaller needles, you might make it with one skein of 800 m (875 yards)/100 g, several test knitters did.

Sample was made using one thread Flaxensilk cobweb colourway Pollen held together with one thread Tynn Silk Mohair (Sandness Garn), colourway 8521 (light green) (232 yards or 212 m/25 g). 100 g (927 yards/848m) mohair was used and the shawl was bound off using Flaxensilk only. If you use the same combination of yarn, be prepared to switch to Flaxensilk 4 threads held together for the bind off, or you will need more mohair. The same applies if using larger needles. Testers commented that they preferred a skinnier weight mohair combined with the cobweb, for instance Ito Sensai or the like.

Construction: The shawl is worked from the neck down, with a knitted BO with picots.

Beads: Optional. Use size 8/0 seed beads, or the size you think fits your yarn. For the crescent and if you bead all the marked stitches, you will need 1211 smaller beads. If beading picots, you will need an additional 37 larger beads, size 6/0 or equivalent. You will be binding off with yarn held double, so the large beads need to be able to pass over this much yarn.

Size: Sample measures 25.5 inches (65 cm) deep and 59 inches (150 cm) wingspan, using needles US 5 (3.75 mm). Pattern is 154 rows and cannot be expanded. If you find yourself running out of yarn or simply want a smaller piece, you will be able bind off sooner (instructions are included in the pattern).

Needles and hooks: US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle or the size you need to get a fabric you like. Crochet hook same size as your needles can also be used for the bind off if you bind off after row 114 or after the extension, but is not necessary. You might want dpns for the first couple of rows for the cast on, but it is not necessary.

Other notions: Stitch markers to mark repeats if you wish. Small crochet hook or other gizmo for placing beads (if using beads). Darning needle.
