ERRATUM!
I got the shaping after the thumb slightly wrong. Basically, the 6 stitches cast on to bridge the thumb hole need to be decreased back down to two. To do this:

Round 1 after thumb: Knit in pattern for 17 stitches, knit plain.
Round 2 after thumb: Knit in pattern for 17 stitches, k, ssk the 19th and 20th stitches together, k2, knit the 24st and 26th stitches together.
Round 3 after thumb: Knit in pattern for 17 stitches, knit plain.
Round 4 after thumb: Knit in pattern for 17 stitches, k, ssk the 19th and 20th stitches together, and knit the 21st and 22nd stitches together.

You should now be back to 36 stitches in total.

Some people are having trouble reversing the thumb shaping, so here’s a description:

After 1 repeats (26 rounds), start thumb shaping: On the next round: knit row 9 of pattern, k16, p, make 1, k2. Knit the next round, but purl the purl stitch from the previous round. Knit row 11 of pattern, k16, p, make 1, knit to end of round. Knit the next round, but purl the purl stitch again. Continue like this until you have increased by 10 stitches, (i.e. there are 19 stitches on the second needle), you should be working on the third repeat of the pattern by now.
Finish on a plain round. Put the extra stitches on a holder, together with the stitches on either side (i.e. including the purled stitch) so there should be 12 stitches on the holder.

Next round cast on 6 sts across the gap and then decrease them down to 2 over the next 4 rounds as before.

Hope this helps!
