Join us for a Hairpin Lace K/CAL in the “Cup of Stitches” group on Ravelry! There are a variety of projects which can be made in this technique (check my Pinterest board for inspiration) and they all are welcome.

If this is your first time trying the technique, this is the perfect opportunity to learn with the help, support, and encouragement that comes with joining a K/CAL.

The poncho is created with long hairpin lace strips of different colors, which are joined together and folded in half at the shoulder lines. The partial joining of the two center strips creates the neckline opening. The partial joining at the sides creates the arm openings.

This pattern assumes basic knowledge of creating hairpin strips, previous experience with the hairpin lace technique is necessary for the successful completion of this garment.

  • Yarn: Sirdar Cotton DK; DK; 232 yd (212 m) per 100 g ball; 100% cotton
  • Hairpin lace loom
  • Hooks: U.S. E (3.5 mm), 5 mm (or larger, if desired) for joining only
  • 18 locking stitch markers
  • Yarn needle to weave in ends

  • 2 (2, 3, 3) balls each in Tranquil 516, Sailor Blue 513, and Vanilla 502

An exact gauge is not crucial for this design. The pattern is written for four hairpin-strip width options 2¾ (3⅛, 3½, 4)” / 7 (8, 9, 10) cm wide.

The measurements listed below are only guidelines and you can change the dimensions of this poncho following the modification tips on page 3.
