Boat Trip is a cowl which uses shaping inspired by a semi-circular shawl, to produce a low swooping front. This cowl provides a secure way of wearing lace around your neck, with no additional bulk that a shawl can produce, and using less yarn than a shawl may require.

The lace portion of the cowl has no rest rows, but is knit in the round so the work is easy to read. The lace is charted and written out fully, as each knitter has preferred methods of reading patterns.

This pattern was designed in response to a knit-a-long with Countess Ablaze around the theme of Greece. I used a one-of-a-kind colourway of a regularly dyed yarn base and designed this cowl, that was inspired by the waves lapping up against the sides of a boat, whilst on a trip around the Greek Islands I experienced on a much loved holiday.

Note on Size: I have a loose gauge and I have given the needle size that I used to get the the gauge stated. Several of my test knitters found that they got gauge with the next size up needle. Whilst accurate gauge isn’t essential, it will change the size of your finished cowl. The two samples illustrate the effect of changing a needle size. The two samples were knit to give options to those of us who have broad shoulders and may want a larger cowl to give extra coverage or want to use up more of their gorgeous skein.

Smaller Size (3.5mm): 22” circumference at the neck, 40” circumference around the bottom edge, 14” from top edge to bottom, measured at the deepest point.
Larger Size (using 3.75mm): 25” circumference at the neck, 52” circumference around the bottom edge, 17” from top edge to bottom, measured at the deepest point
