The fifth and final of my Wuxing: 5 Elements series of hats is themed for the element of Wood. Each of these hats is pushing the envelope on double-knitting in some way; this one uses a combination of multi-color double-knitting and off-the-grid techniques to create a wood-grain effect with knots.

Despite the apparent free-form nature of this pattern, it’s actually governed by a clear logic —to the point that you can learn to follow the logic and ignore most of the charts.

To increase the randomness of the pattern, charts are chosen by rolling dice. Every hat made this way will be unique (pending further calculations)!
