My sister and I do love our button cowls, they’re by far the easiest scarf to wear and can be worn a variety of different ways.

When I was creating this pattern I wanted something with a little more textural interest than just a basic rectangle with some buttons, so I created a braid effect using cables. Because the weave of this piece is still a bit loose, no button holes need to be placed, whichever buttons you use should be able to just pop right through the knit. Don’t worry too much about your buttons being too big either, as long as they are 1 to 3 inches across, they will work (but 2 is perfect).

It’s a very simple pattern, and exceptionally quick to knit up because the pattern calls for big, big needles and not one strand, but two, of extra bulky yarn.
