Brantford Hat and Mitts

February 2013
Aran / 10 ply (8 wpi) ?
15 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches in stocking stitch
US 8 - 5.0 mm
200 - 230 yards (183 - 210 m)
Hat measures 45 cm /18 in around, unstretched; but stretches to fit heads 50-55 cm/20-22 in.

This hat features a side vent with elegant faux buttons. It has alternating stripes with slipped stitches cleverly used to create vertical lines as well as horizontal.

It is worked in the round, and the shaping is handled by reducing the number of stitches between each vertical “stripe” or slipped stitch.
While the sample shows 2 contrasting colors, it could also be worked in a single-color version, where the slipped stitches work to create a subtle textured variation.

The matching fingerless mitts have the same button trim.
