The name for this small stockinette stitch lace shawl was inspired by poet Bill Holm’s wonderful book, The Windows of Brimnes. In it, he explains that brim means surf and nes means peninsula or headlands in Icelandic. With its border of Icelandic shell lace—or old shale as it is called in the Barbara Walker Treasuries—this crescent shaped shawl reminds me of land reaching out into the sea.
It starts at the top with bands of Icelandic spider lace and increases every row along the top edge to elongate the ends. An option is included for a plain stockinette stitch top.
At the bottom border, waves of shell lace can be knit in a variety of colors. Instructions are given for two sizes, and the size can be customized.
Designed for Istex Einband Lace yarn, it also can be knit in a variety of other lace, fingering, and Shetland/sport/DK weight yarns.
Pattern includes both written instructions and charts.
