All the designs in my College Collection are inspired by the universities that mean a lot to me and mine. And it doesn’t seem too long ago that my sister was at Bristol studying for her Post Graduate Certificate of Education. Although, it’s amazing how quickly time flies and how many students she’s taught since then!

We grew up not far from Bristol too, and one of my overwhelming impressions from visiting when I was little was that there were a lot of big brick buildings. And Bristol is one of the ‘red brick’ universities and is also well known for its ties to engineering and construction. When I was contemplating the design for this scarf, I wanted it to have a solid, constructed feel that incorporated decorative ‘brick’ motifs amongst solid ‘bricks’ not just to reflect this, but also because this was where my sister laid the foundation for her teaching career.

Bristol is an elegant Aran weight college style scarf, which is slightly shorter than the other scarves in the collection, but because it’s quite wide it still has that cosy, homely feel that you would expect.

It is easy to lengthen if you want your scarf to be longer by increasing the pattern rather than adding fringing, and if you want to keep the original length and leave off the fringing then it looks great without it too.

An ideal project for knitters of all abilities, it is a fun and relaxing to knit. The pattern is made up of sections and works up fairly quickly once you get used to the order that these sections are knitted. This also makes it easy to put down and pick up, but it does make a great box set companion as well, especially as the nights start to draw in.

It’s versatile to style, and can be worn long, flung over one shoulder, wrapped around the neck or any number of other ways.

But whether you choose to knit this as a gift for a loved one or just for yourself, this is a fabulous addition to any autumn/winter wardrobe!

Happy Knitting!
