“Suddenly one of the goblins inside shouted. “There is a shadow by the door. Something is outside.” Bilbo’s heart jumped into his mouth. He gave a terrific squirm. Buttons burst off in all directions. He was through with a torn coat and waistcoat, leaping down the steps like a goat.“ -- J.R.R. Tolkien

Skill Level: Adventurous beginner; the lace stitches are very basic, and the sock construction is straightforward.
Materials: 350-400 yards (320-360 m) of sock yarn, the socks pictured are a size M, and used 372 yards of String Theory “Caper Sock” in the color Firecracker.
Optional: 4 or 6 small buttons to attach to the front of the sock.
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles; the pattern is written for either DPNs or magic loop.
Tools: Tape measure, scissors, and tapestry needle
Gauge: 34 stitches and 48 rounds per 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch.
Sizing: Small (Medium, Large, Extra-large) sizes measure approximately 8(9,10,11) inches or 20.3(22.8,25.4,28) cm. around the cuff. Leg height, ankle depth, and foot length are all adjustable to size and preference.

Note on sizing: The sock is fairly elastic, without being stretchy. Fit is true to size, but if in doubt, work a slightly smaller size.
