I wanted a last-minute gift for someone, a small “thank you” for a kindness, for a person who wears neutral colours and basic unfussy styles. The speed with which I needed the gift suggested the heavy weight yarn, and the design itself grew in its own way on the needles. I knew I wanted something classic, quite plain, but with some interest for me to knit, so I designed this cowl. I worked out the basics but then just let it grow as it wished, hence the name.

The simple style works well in both plain yarns for a neutral cowl to match any outfit, or have fun with multicoloured or textured yarns which don’t have any patterning to compete with. This would make an ideal project for a beginner wanting to try working in the round.

You will need: 80 yards (73m) super chunky/super bulky yarn
9mm (US 13) needles for knitting in the round
1 stitch marker
Darning needle (for weaving in ends)

You need to be able to: work in the round, knit and purl, that’s about it really!
