Almost every knitter I’ve ever met has something we all call “stash.” It’s that collection of yarn crammed into drawers and cupboards all over a knitter’s house. It’s that odd ball left after your latest sweater or that ball of yarn you saw that the yarn store on sale and couldn’t resist. You know which ones I’m talking about.

To help us get this crazy stash monster tamed, I came up with this super simple drop stitch scarf/cowl after I was gifted with size 19, 35, and 50 circular needles at Christmas time. This is a good project even for a beginner who may wind up purchasing yarn to make a snuggly project.

Yarn Requirements: Oddments, singletons, leftovers of any weight yarn you have knocking around your stash. I used worsted, fingering, and lace weight yarns held together for the sample shown above. Your yarn requirements will vary based on your needle size and gauge. Of the mohair that I used throughout, I used less than half the 300 yard ball, so that tells me that this scarf doesn’t require super long yardage if you are purchasing yarn to make it instead of using scraps like I did. You will be holding 6-8 strands together and using it as one “yarn” throughout this project. As one yarn runs out, simply add in another yarn and continue knitting.

Gauge: Totally doesn’t matter! Depending on the number of yarns you are holding together, you may want to upsize or downsize your needle/gauge.
