Illusion or shadow knitting is one of my favorite knitting magic tricks! This scarf looks like simple 2-color stripes when viewed straight on, but when viewed at an angle the hidden butterfly motif appears.

This pattern utilizes only knits and purls, and only one color is used at a time, so it is perfect for beginners ready to try something new. It also serves as an easy introduction to charts, with pattern stitches highlighted.

Uses worsted-weight yarn in two colors, about 250 yards of each.

One size. Exact gauge is not important, but for best results, stitches should be snug and fabric slightly stiff.
