Pattern Update 24 Jun 2013:
Please note that a new version of this pattern, the BYOB 2.0 - Bring Your Own Bag v2.0 is available separately on Ravelry to update the original one published in Knitty, Summer 2008. The BYOB 2.0 Version includes instructions for 3 different sized bags and has been re-written for new all-cotton yarns. Please click here for this new version.

Original BYOB pattern:
Linen bags are great for carrying bottles and heavy items home from the supermarket, but for the bulky awkwardly-shaped items you can’t beat a stretchy knitted bag.

These bags have a wide shaped base making it easy to load items at the check-out, and the lower striped Seed Stitch section ensures that small items will not drop out. The central area features a flexible openwork design which is quick and easy to work. An upper handle worked in Seed Stitch with a separately worked hand grip is soft to hold and has extra reinforced stitches at the edges for strength.

Now all you have to do is remember to take them with you! Put a couple of these BYOB bags in a linen carrier by the back door or in the car and then you will be sure you always have them to hand when you head to the shops.

Then you can say with pride: “No Plastic Bags for Me!”
