Cable Capable
I created this scarf because I wanted to practice cabling, and what better way to learn than to repeat it… twenty-two times! By the time I was finished I’d learned how to cable without a needle, as well as how to do lace within cable windows. These are optional skills; you don’t have to know them to follow the basic pattern, but there are notes at the end to help you if you wish to give them a try.
You’ll need to decide how long you want your scarf to be. You can work at any length you like, just so long as the repeat is a multiple of 16 stitches, plus 8. I did about 356 stitches (22 repeats) and ended up with about 7 feet/2 metres worth of scarf. I would highly suggest doing a gauge swatch before you decide, just to know how your yarn works.
The pattern assumes you do the full scarf, but as it’s written in repeat format, you will be able to follow it no matter your repeat size. Have fun!
Stitch markers will be incredibly helpful during the initial cast on since there are so many stitches. You can use scrap yarn if you don’t have stitch markers just for the initial cast-on. They can also be used to mark repeats.
On page 5 you will find extra notes for those with more experience. This includes those who wish to have their scarf end more symmetrically, those who would like a lengthwise cable scarf, and those who wish to include the lace insert in the window of the cable as shown in the photograph below. If you are somewhat new to knitting, stick with the original pattern.
