I designed this hat as my submission for the Level 3 requirement of the MHK program. Several years ago, my girlfriend asked me to knit her a hat that would adequately cover her ears while we walked our dogs during the chilly winter months. Wanting to make something a little different than a traditional earflap hat, the bonnet seemed a nice alternative. After many years, it still pleases me when she wears the original version, and it inspired me to design another bonnet. My updated design has added cables for texture and warmth, and for a bit of finesse, small cables around the edges of the opening in the back. This was inspired by Debbie Bliss’ book Design It, Knit It. Also, as an alternative to knitting the entire piece flat and seaming like traditional bonnets, it is seamless without extra bulk in the back of the head.
