Cabled Viking Hat, inpsired (surprise, surprise) by Eric Northman of the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris.

I needed a hat that would fit the big headed in my family, but also be easily converted for smaller sized noggins. I finally settled on this ribbed cap with the occasional cable around the crown of the head. Many rows of ribbing before the cables lets it be turned up like a watch cap or there are instructions for an alternate picot-edged brim so make it more girly and cloche-like.

Pattern instructions for sizes 0-9 mo, one-size-fits most children, adult and “extra-hugey.”

The adult/extra hugey size used one skein of approx. 150-170 yds.
The infant/child sizes used one skein of approx. 110 yds.

You will also need:
Yarn (see notes above for yardage requirements)
1 set of 4 DPNs in size US 5 (3.75mm) or one 18” circular needle in this size
1 cable needle
Yarn needle
Row counter (optional)
