I made this to cover a soup can. For the size can I used I chained 33 (long enough to fit around the can) and then SC (32) for 21 rows. It made the rectangle tall enough to fold over to cover the rim of the can to prevent a sharp edge. Depending on the size of the soup can and how tightly you crochet you may have to adjust. Once I had a rectangle the correct size I folded it in half and whip-stitched the seam then fastened off and slipped on the can. I plan to fill them with pencils and give as teacher gifts.
I used Red Heart Classic Multi colored yarn to give it a bright colorful look but any yarn would do. I was able to make 3 from one skein of yarn with a bit left over.
