Cape Town Protea is part of The Knitting on Safari Collection, three shawls by Kino Knits. These shawls showcase one, two, and three colors, respectively. All three shawls can be knit in any yarn weight/gauge and any yardage!

I don’t know about you, but I love to find amazing local yarn while traveling and bring it home as my souvenir. The first shawl in the Kino Knits Knitting on Safari Collection encourages you to use up that yarn and showcase it in a spectacular single-skein shawl. I chose some cowgirlblues sock yarn I discovered in Cape Town, South Africa. Garter sections surround a lace panel paying homage to an iconic South African flower, the protea. Best of all, after the lace panel, just knit in garter till you run out – no point in letting any of that special souvenir yarn go to waste!

The Dizzy Knitter has kits for this shawl using Dream in Color Smooshy.

Skills: increases, decreases, and lace (charted and written options).

Yarn:
1 skein sport yarn, recommend at least 100 g/3.5 oz. May use different weights if desired, though this will affect the finished size of the shawl.

Sample shown in cowgirlblues Sock Weight, 100% superwash wool, 177 yards/162 m per 1.76 oz/50 g, colorway Jade

Size:
As this shawl is highly adaptable, the finished dimensions will vary with yardage. Sample used 336 yards/308 m and has 53”/135 cm wingspan and 10.75”/27 cm depth.

Needles:
US 7 (4.5 mm) for sport weight. Use smaller needles for finer yarn and larger needles for thicker yarn to achieve a drapey fabric.

Tools:

  • 2 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Sample Blocked Gauge:
40 sts and 48 rows = 4”/10 cm, garter, wet blocked and laid flat to dry, not pinned or stretched
