I don’t consider myself a crochet-er. That is, I know a couple stitches, but don’t generally do more than some edging on
a sweater that I knit. (Nothing against crochet, it’s just not where I spend my time.) But there are certain effects with lace that you just can’t accomplish with knitting. Not one to let my lack of skills or knowledge stop me, I got a book of common crochet motifs from the library and practiced a bit. All the motifs were too big. So I modified, and modified
again, and came up with my own little flower motif. (Directions for the motifs are both written out and charted.)

Anyway, this is a really fun little project. Not exactly instant gratification, but the progress is so obvious and quick it’s kind of hard to put down.

Don’t let the motifs put you off if you’re not a crochet-er. They use only the most basic stitches - chain; single, half double and double crochet; and slip stitches. Give them a try!

If you REALLY don’t want to do the motifs, maybe work out some kind of swap with someone who does crochet! The motifs work up quickly, so a nice scarf or hat could be a good trade.
