The Castle on a Cloud is a wish and a dream - a place where no one is lonely and no one has reason to cry, where adults and children are treated with kindness, dignity, respect, and love.

There are days when the castle seems unattainable, when the news headlines make it clear that we as a society need to do better. The Castle on a Cloud Shawl was designed with the hope that we will do better, that we will celebrate diversity of color and work to create a world where the castle doesn’t seem quite so far away. And it’s a reminder that even when we head downwards, and no matter how far down we go, we have the ability to work our way back up.

The shawl starts at one end and increases downwards towards the center. It then decreases back to the other end to create a symmetrical triangle that is wide and shallow. The pattern is fully adjustable and includes instructions for making the shawl larger/smaller and adjusting the colors in any way. It’s a practical, versatile piece - let it drape as a shawl, or wrap it around your neck as a scarf. It’s cozy enough to add warmth, but lacy and lightweight so it’s not too heavy.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors
The sample was created using fingering weight yarn, but can easily work in any weight from lace to bulky. It uses 230yds/50g in each of 3 coordinating colors, but can be adjusted to work with a range of yardages.

The Castle on a Cloud specifically designed to highlight fades and similar color sets, but works up beautifully in any color style from speckled to solid to gradient, and the openwork is visible even with variegated colors.

The pattern includes specific instructions for making the sample as stated and also has detailed notes for adjusting colors so you can work it using whatever color set your heart desires!

Size
When gauge is met, 680yds/150g of fingering weight will net a shawl that has a wingspan of 76”/193cm and measures 19”/48cm down the back. Size can be customized by working extra/fewer repeats. If you customize the shawl to fit one skein, a shawl made with 450yds/100g of fingering will have a wingspan of 61”/155cm and measure 14”/35.5cm down the back.

Shape and construction
The pattern is worked seamlessly from side-to-side to create a shallow triangle.
