In honor of my good friend’s neice, Quinn Anlauf, I will be donating $2 from each pattern sold to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
- clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections
- obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
Quinn Anlauf has been living with Cystic Fibrosis for 14 years. CF presents daily challenges for approximately 30,000 Americans. Her day is not the typical day of a 14 year old. She awakens much earlier so she may begin her 30 minute therapy treatment and still get to school on time. She ends her day with another 30 minute therapy. She must take enzymes with her meals in order for her digestive system to absorb the nutrients her body needs. Much of the school year she is on antibiotics to prevent bacteria from settling in her lungs. Yet Quinn is not defined by her CF. She is a dancer, cheerleader, was in her school’s colorguard, and most recently has completed two 5K runs.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is a nonprofit donor-supported organization dedicated to attacking cystic fibrosis from every angle. Their focus is to support the development of new drugs to fight the disease, improve the quality of life for those with CF, and ultimately to find a cure.
