One ball or less of cotton yarn best in a solid color to see the picture. Note a very dark or bright color will make the picture harder to see.

Needle size can be your preference. I prefer a US 3 or US 5 because I am a loose knitter, and dropping to a smaller needle size helps the pattern pop out more. But if you block or are a tight knitter by all means use whatever needle size you are most comfortable with
