Featuring candy canes, gingerbread men, and snowflakes this hat will get you in the mood for Christmas! Written for a range of sizes, you can knit one for the whole family (hats are a lot quicker to make than matching Christmas jumpers!). Whether you give them as a gift or keep them for yourself, this fun to knit hat will put a smile on everyone’s face whilst keeping heads warm and cosy.

Method: This stranded colorwork hat is knit in the round from the brim up. It can be worked in three or more contrasting colors (hat shown uses four colors) and topped off with a fluffy pompom.

This hat can be knitted on dpns, by magic loop, or on a short circular (in which case you will still need dpns for the crown decreases).

Please note the colorwork design in this pattern is charted not written out. You need to be prepared to read and work from charts in order to enjoy knitting this design.

Size: This pattern is written in 4 sizes referred to throughout the pattern as S, M, L, and XL. All instructions that differ depending on the size you are knitting are color coded.

To achieve a good fit, you should choose a size with a hat circumference 1.5” – 3” (3.75 - 7.75 cm) smaller than your head circumference.

Size Finished Hat Circumference
S - 18” (46 cm)
M - 19.5” (49.5 cm)
L - 21” (53.5 cm)
XL - 22.5” (57cm)

Yarn: You can use any 4 ply yarn that you like and with which you can get gauge to knit this hat.
Please note I do not recommend using yarns with a high cotton content as cotton doesn’t stretch as much as other fibers and this will affect the fit of your hat.

This is a great pattern to experiment with color and use mini skeins or any leftovers lurking in your stash. Be creative, have fun, but keep in mind changes will affect yardage and number of ends to weave in. The amounts of each color required will depend on how many colors you pick, where you choose to use them in the glove, and which size and option you are knitting. As a guide for the hat pictured (size M in four colors) I used the following quantities of Drops Nord:

MC – 19 Forest Green approx. 85 metres (93 yards)
CC1 – 1 Off White approx. 75 metres (82 yards)
CC2 – 14 Red approx. 3 metres (3.5 yards)
CC3 – 22 Chestnut approx. 35 metres (38 yards)
