Chuck was originally born (or maybe hatched) to be part of somebody’s Easter decoration, but of course he could be just a toy for the children in your life or your own non-seasonal decoration. He is a quick knit for the experienced toy knitters. If you are not very experienced, don’t be afraid; there are detailed instructions and links to tutorials in the pattern for you.

This cute baby duckling is worked in the round starting from the middle of the bottom with the disappearing loop cast on (or another circular cast on of your choice, or even the long-tail cast on and a bit of extra sewing). The body and head are worked in one piece (no picking up stitches). The other parts are worked separately (again in the round) and then sewn to the body. The whole toy is mostly in stockinette stitch, with a bit of garter stitch here and there. The only technique that may be unfamiliar to intermediate-level English-speaking knitters is the backward loop increase on the feet, but it can be replaced with the “make one” increase. There is plenty of Kitchener stitch on the small parts.

Other tools and materials:

  • toy stuffing
  • eye materials: scraps of dark yarn or two beads or small safety eyes
  • sewing thread and sewing needle for the beads (if any are used)
  • tapestry/yarn needle
  • stitch marker (optional)
  • pins (at least two)
  • any kind of removable markers to mark placement of eyes and attachable parts (optional)
