About this design
Circular logic is a logical fallacy in which the reasoner begins with what they are trying to end with … or to explain with my circular “crochet” logic, I wanted to end with a motif that transformed from a circle into a square and that’s what I started with. Makes sense, right? Except, of course, I couldn’t resist a little bit of tinkering and that came in the form of yet another circle, because who wouldn’t want to go overboard with circles when you are on a roll? And has logic ever been a feature of one’s passion for fibre and making things? Not in my world :-).

So, why not discard logic and reach for your crochet hook and experience happiness in both a circular and a square way with the Circular Logic Scarf.

This design is part of my 2019-2020 Lolly Jar Design Challenge. You can find other patterns in the collection here.

Tension
A single blocked square crocheted with a 3 mm (US size C2, UK size 11) hook measures approximately 4.5 cm/1 ¾ ins when measured along each edge. A close match for tension is important for this pattern in order to ensure that your finished scarf is the correct width and length. Please move up or down a hook size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.

Yarn
This design requires a range of colours in fingering/4 ply weight yarn and the yarn amounts needed for each colour will vary from project to project. For a single square, you will need:

• 2.14 metres/2.3 yards for the centre disc.
• 2.0 metres/2.2 yards for the outer circle.
• 2.2 metres/2.4 yards for the edge of the square.

The finished Circular Logic Scarf contains 120 completed square units, which means that you will need a total of:

• 256 metres/276 yards for all the centre discs.
• 240 metres/264 yards for all the outer centre circles.
• 264 metres/288 yards for all the square edges.

If you choose to add the fringe you will require an additional 16 centre discs plus an extra 23.5 metres/26 yards of the square edge colour.

The sample Circular Logic Scarf used a total of 16 colours, all drawn from leftovers in my 4 ply/fingering weight stash (4 shades of purple including 2 multi-dye purples, 4 shades of red including one multi-dye red, 2 shades of peach, both multi-dye, 2 shades of pink including one multi-dye, 1 shade of lilac and 2 shades of maroon, including 1 multi-dye). The main colour is Shepherd Baby Wool Merino 4 ply/fingering in colour way Silver (29750.
