This lightweight scarf uses three different yarns and stitches in a way that creates a knitted fabric with a woven appearance. To get the woven tweed look, choose closely matched colors, which are worked in alternate rows. The scarf is knitted sideways: the longest edges are the cast-on and bind-off edges and each woven segment is divided by a raised knit row to create lengthwise wide stripes. This scarf is worked on a long circular needle to hold all of the stitches, but the pattern is worked in rows as if using straight needles. The fringe is created by leaving long (6 in/15 cm) yarn tails when you join each new color in. See the close up photos for details of the stitches (plus a swatch I made of three other colors as an example).
