Open front cardigans are cool, but sometimes they are too cool, if you catch my drift ;). When there’s a chill in the air, it’s nice to have the option to close the front. This cardigan is designed with exactly that in mind; the collar sections overlap completely at the bust when closed -- nice and cozy -- but when left unbuttoned, the fronts roll apart just the right amount forming a cool, drapey collar.

It is worked top-down in one piece with minimal seaming, and has waist shaping at the back. The collar is picked up and knit at the end. It is intended to fit with 0 to 3 inches of ease.

The sample shown is knit using one strand fingering-weight cotton and one strand lace-weight alpaca silk, but the pattern will work in any dk or sport weight yarn, or another combination of lace and fingering weight yarns that can be knit to the noted gauge. Yarns that drape a little are of course ideal. The yarns noted above are just a few suggestions that would work well for this pattern.

The collar is intended to roll, and you can work the bottom and sleeve edges in st st and let them roll as well, or work a few rows garter st to keep them flatter. Both options are given in the pattern. Note that yarns that contain silk or plant fibres, or loosely spun wools generally tend to roll less, while tightly spun wools or those containing nylon or other synthetics will generally roll more.
